Bắc Ninh is a province of Vietnam, located in the Red River Delta of the northern part of the country. It is the smallest province of Vietnam by area and is situated to the east of the nation’s capital, Hanoi, and borders Bắc Giang, Hưng Yên, Hải Dương and Hanoi. The province covers an area of 822.71 square kilometres and as of 2022, it had a population of 1.488.250. The province’s name literally means “northern serenity”. Bắc Ninh has a Human Development Index of 0.768 (high), ranking seventh among all municipalities and provinces of Vietnam.
The province is rich in culture and is known nationally for Quan họ folk music. Quan họ was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.
For two thousand years of existence, Bac Ninh is vivid in the Vietnamese mind as a land of talents: there were times when the province contributed as much as 25% of people with doctorate degrees in Vietnam. The talent is not only shown academically but also artistically. Bac Ninh is where, without doubt, concentrates the highest density of handicraft villages in Vietnam. These include Dong Ho woodcut painting village, Đồng Kỵ Wood and carving village, and Phu Lang pottery village. Besides handicraft villages, Bac Ninh also has a variety of temples and pagodas, many of which are considered the cradle of Buddhism in Vietnam.
